Understanding Titanium Dioxide in Coatings

Titanium dioxide is the primary white pigment used when a coating needs opacity, clean color and reliable light scattering. The best grade depends on the binder system, exposure conditions and processing equipment—not simply on the highest quoted whiteness.

Why TiO₂ matters in coatings

Well-dispersed pigment gives a formulation efficient hiding power and a stable visual appearance. Surface treatment affects wetting, dispersion, gloss and resistance to moisture or UV exposure.

Formulation tip: evaluate tinting strength, oil absorption and dispersion time together. A grade that looks attractive on one metric can raise total formulation cost on another.

Rutile versus anatase

Rutile grades

Rutile titanium dioxide is generally selected for exterior and high-durability coatings because its crystal structure and surface treatments support better weatherability, opacity and resistance to chalking.

Anatase grades

Anatase can be a practical choice for protected indoor systems where cost, whiteness and ease of dispersion matter more than long-term outdoor UV resistance.
